Icon, The life of the Prophet Elijah - Wood - 19th century

Russian Old Believers icon depicting the life of the Prophet Elijah ( his name means: . My God is Jahweh) . The icon depicts various events in the life of the Prophet that do not take place on the same moment but are placed in the same field. Central the Prophet meditates at the Kerit stream; 1 Kings,17, verse 1. In the lower left the Prophet wants to die, but an angel wakes him up. 1 Kings, 19, verse 5. In the middle left the rare scene of the destroying of the Baal altars, 1 Kings,18, verse 25-38. To the right his succesor Elisa learns the prophetic power of Elijah's mantle. In the upper part Elijah's fiercy decent into heaven, 2 Kings, 2, verse 8-14. Good quality icon in 17th century style, circa 1800.
