Identified CDV Album w/ Union Soldiers
This lovely, original Civil War-period carte-de-visite (CDV) album featuring two soldier photos was presented to an Emma Eaton (nee Upham) of Massachusetts for New Years, 1867. Inside, Miss Upham placed several interesting photos, including two Union soldiers. One is most likely Elbridge M. Upham, who served in Company K of the 23rd Massachusetts Infantry from mid-1862 through the close of the War. Upham sports his company letter K and regimental number 23 on the front of his cap. Of note are the veteran stripes on his coatsleeves, which may indicate that this photo was taken in December of 1863, when he re-enlisted. A second, beautifully tinted CDV of an armed Union cavalry trooper is also tucked into the album. This may be Emma’s brother, Alvah Eaton, who served in the 1st Rhode Island Cavalry and was captured in Virginia in early 1863.
The rest of the photos include several lovely women and other desirable subjects. All photos appear to be in fine condition. The images have not been disturbed and its possible more information is on their reverse should the next owner desire to remove them from the album pages. A truly lovely example of an untouched war-time carte-de-visite (CDV) album that contains multiple soldiers.
