Ignaz Epper, Apollo 1910s Expressionism Large Signed Woodcut

Antique 1910-20s woodcut - limited, numbered and signed artwork

"Apollo" genuine woodcut by Ignaz Epper, signed "Ign Epper" [the authentic Epper writing with 'I' looking like 'J'] in black ink, additional pencil inscription in German: "Handdruck" (hand-printed); "11/75" (plate # 11 of the limited number of 75 printed plates), xxx; "bestaetigt" (confirmed) "xxx[?] Epper Charles". Expressionism of the 1910s-1920s. The artwork is not dated, however, the fact that authenticity was confirmed by the artist's father Charles indicates that the artwork was created in this period, the 1910s-1920s.

Certifications of Authenticity is included.

Thin brownish colored paper, total paper size: 16" x 19.1/2" [40.6cm x 49.5cm]; artwork size: 12" x 14.3/4" [30.5cm x 37.5cm]. Very good condition.

Ignaz Epper [1892-1969), Swiss artist, one of the leading exponents of Swiss Expressionism. His fame is primarily based on his graphic artworks, in particular on wood engravings created in the 1910s and 1920s.

Epper was born in San Gallen on 6 July 1892. He trained as a designer and embroiderer between 1908 and 1912 before working as a freelance artist in Weimar and Munich from 1913 onwards. It was during this time that he made his first wood carvings and lithographs.

Between 1916 and 1917 he met Han Coray and Fritz Pauli. In 1919, he married Mischa Quarles van Ufford and visited Ascona for the first time. During his Zurich years (where he lived until 1932), he met numerous painters, sculptors (Geiser, Fischer, Kunding, Rabinovitch, Suzanne Schwob, Stanzani, Wiemken) and writers (Buhrer, Humm, Morgenthaler, Pulver, Roelli). Over the years, he spent time in Switzerland, Germany, France, the Netherlands, and southern Italy. In the winter of 1932 he moved to Ascona, where he lived in Casa Pasini until 1938, before moving to a residence that would later house the museum (until 2020).

Epper's artworks are exhibited in the several museums and private collections. The Ignaz and Mischa Epper Foundation in Ascona, Switzerland was founded in 1974. The "Museo Epper" was opened in 1980.
