With a fine fullpage frontispiece portrait of the dedicatee, Pope Clement XI (dated 1716) and 7 plates ( 4 folding ) of papal court ceremonial engraved by Hubertus Vincent after Giuseppe Severoni. Engraved ornamental head and tail pieces and decorative initials. Contemporary stiff vellum; joints cracked but firm. One of the first systematic histories of the Roman curial bureaucracy based on a wealth of documentation and illustrated with seven fine plates representing court ceremonies. The most striking illustration shows the twelve judges of the Rota praying in a circular hall surrounding the Holy Spirit. The Rota was the supreme court of the Roman Catholic Church established during the Avignon papacy in the 13th century. It was named Rota (wheel),because the judges, called auditors, originally met in a round room used to hear cases in the great hall at Avignon. The author was the youngest son of the great Roman artist Gian Lorenzo Bernini, who devoted himself to the study of the Church, and served as a canon to Santa Maria Maggiore. The dedication is to Pope Clement XI (1700-21), patron of the arts and sciences and great benefactor of the Vatican Library. His fine frontispiece portrait was taken from life by the Roman painter and etcher Giovanni Odazzi (Joannes Odatj 1663-1731), a pupil of Corneliis Bloemaert and Ciro Ferri, who became famous under his pontificate for his contribution to restoration of the Church of San Clemente. A very good copy with contemporary manuscript presentation inscription on verso of first flyleaf; some occasional toning; title blank margin with stamp of former Carmelite Library in the Church of Santa Maria de Vittoria in Rome.
