“Immaculate Conception”. Carved, gilded and polychromed wooden sculpture. Colonial School. 17th century.
This image is a clear example of how a great sculptor can transmit the art of movement to us, and that of infinite folds, in an almost musical way. All of this is done with the intention of creating art that would create affection and emotion that would soften the hearts of the indigenous population, and therefore attract them to the Christian faith through imagery.
This is a beautiful and very spiritual image of the immaculate conception. The Virgin Mary is in her classic position on the quarter moon. Her hands are close to her chest in an attitude of prayer. Her face, sweet and serene, looks into infinity, framed with long hair which falls down her back forming voluminous waves.
