Imperial Chinese Sacrificial Blue Cup, Yongzheng

An Imperial Chinese sacrificial-blue-glazed porcelain cup with a wooden stand. The bottom has a 6-character Yongzheng mark and is of the period.

Dimensions: 1 1/2 inches tall X 2 7/8 inches wide; 3.8 cm tall X 7.3 cm wide. All measurements are approximate.

Condition: Numerous miniscule glaze pops to the rim, overall good condition.

Provenance: From the estate of John Calvin Ferguson, a well-known American scholar of Chinese art, collector and procurer for American art museums, and a Chinese government advisor. Mr. Ferguson first came to China in 1887 and stayed until 1943. He was the founder and first president of Nanjing University in 1888. He also founded Jiaotong University in Shanghai in 1902. He collected many important Chinese arts and antiques. Some of them are currently in Metropolitan Museum in New York City, as well as the Nanjing University Museum.

Reference: A similar sacrificial blue glazed cup can be found in the collection of the Palace Museum in Beijing, collection number 226979 (fig. 1). A similar Yongzheng period sacrificial blue cup was sold at Christie's Hong Kong on November 27, 2013 as lot number 3492.
