FINE LOUIS XVI STYLE ORMOLU MOUNTED MARBLE TOP MAHOGANY COMMODE A VANTAUX, HIPPOLYTE-EDME PRETOT

based on the celebrated commode by Beneman and Stockel, made for Marie Antoinette's chambers at the Chateau de Fontainebleau in 1786; the brecciated red marble top above two frieze drawers, the arched central panel set with a bronze plaque cast with a figure of Ceres, the interior with two linen drawers; the whole with elaborate well cast ormolu neoclassical style mounts,
stamped Pretot twice on the top of the carcass.

The ebeniste Hippolyte-Edme Pretot (1812-1855) is recorded as working at 16, rue de l'Abbaye, at 11bis rue Saint-Germain-des-Pres in 1841, and at 3-5 rue dy Harlay from 1846 onwards. Perot and firm exhibited in Paris at the 1849 Exposition Nationale and later in London at the 1852 Exhibition where he was awarded a Medal for his furniture.
