Important Reverse Painted Snuff Bottle, Zhou Leuan

Painted to one side with a pleasant garden scene with an insect hovering near plants under an inscription, the reverse depicting a graceful prunus branch in a crackled porcelain vase; signed Zhou Leyuan with one seal, dated autumn 1892. Provenance: David Chang collection (San Francisco, California). Acquired in 2000. The painting style belongs to Shanghai School, the subject matter can be traced to the Song dynasty. Compare a very similar bottle by Zhou Leuan, also painted with insects, illustrated and published in "The World in a Bottle" Chinese Inside Painting Snuff Bottles from the collection of Joseph Baruch Silver and Traditional Chines Paintings Pg. 71, Fig. C14 , and an inside-painted bottle with a vase containing a prunus branch published and illustrated in Chinese Snuff Bottles From the Richard F. Kuenkler Collection Pg.60, Fig. 64.
