Apart from a Ferrari, no car is more recognisable as classically Italian than the FIAT 500. Replacement for FIAT's much-loved 500 'Topolino', the Nuova 500 debuted in 1957. A radical departure from its predecessor's essentially pre-war design, FIAT's new baby featured unitary construction, a full-length opening (trasformabile) fabric roof and all-independent suspension while carrying its engine at the rear. The 479cc power unit was an air-cooled overhead-valve twin, the first such used by FIAT, and the gearbox a four-speeder.
The austerity of the basic 500 - it was known as the 'Economica' - was not well received, prompting the swift introduction of a revised and better equipped model, which first appeared towards the end of 1957 at the Turin Show. Refinements incorporated in this less Spartan version included wind-down windows, an upholstered rear seat, column-mounted switch gear stalks, and hubcaps. Introduced in 1960, the 500D used the 499.5cc engine of the 500 Sport in de-tuned form, which nevertheless brought with it a small gain in horsepower. With the introduction of the 500D, the short sunroof first seen on the Sport became available on the standard saloon.
The Nuova 500 was an immense success for FIAT, and by the time production ceased in 1975 almost 3,000,000 of these adorable little cars had been sold. The original FIAT 500 remains as popular today as it ever was and was once voted 'Sexiest Car' by the readers of the UK's Top Gear motoring magazine.
This beautiful FIAT 500 Trasformabile was purchased by the vendor at Motore Vintage Dällikon, Switzerland in May 2020 (invoice on file). One of the nicest we have seen, it is fully restored and performed very well when taken on a short test drive by a Bonhams specialist. Fitted with a 'vintage'-style Bluetooth radio, the car is sold with cancelled Swiss Carte Grise.

Parmi les raffinements proposés par cette version moins spartiate, on trouvait des glaces latérales descendantes, un siège arrière garni, des commodos sous volant et des cache-moyeux. Puis, lancée en 1960, la 500D recevait le moteur de 499,5 cm3 de la 500 Sport, dans une version détarée mais qui lui assurait tout de même un petit gain de puissance. C'est avec le lancement de la 500D que le toit ouvrant court, vu pour la première fois sur la Sport, devint disponible sur la berline standard.
La Nuova 500 fut pour FIAT un immense succès et, lorsque sa production prit fin en 1975, près de trois millions de cette adorable petite voiture s'étaient écoulés. La FIAT 500 originale demeure aussi populaire que jamais ; elle a un jour été désignée comme 'Voiture la plus sexy' par les lecteurs du magazine automobile britannique Top Gear.
Cette splendide FIAT 500 Trasformabile fut achetée par son vendeur en mai 2020 chez Motore Vintage Dällikon, en Suisse (facture présente au dossier). C'est l'une des plus belles que nous ayons vues ; elle est complètement restaurée et s'est très bien comportée lors d'un court essai effectué par un spécialiste de Bonhams. Equipée d'un autoradio Bluetooth de style vintage, elle est vendue avec une carte grise suisse annulée.
