Place Published: Various places
Publisher:
Date Published: 1927
Description:

Includes:
Three autograph letters signed by Mrs. R. Garcia, stating that a Mr. Van Wolbeck, alleged grandson of John A. Sutter, is in California, hoping to serve the state, and in turn be suitably compensated. Totaling eight pages in all, each dated July 18, 1927.
Typed letter signed by California Governor, C.C. Young, forwarding the letters to Mr. A.S. Dudley of the Sacramento Chamber of Commerce. July 21, 1927.
Carbon of a typed letter from the California governor to Mrs. R. Garcia, acknowledging receipt of the letters and their being sent on to the Sacramento CC. Unsigned. July 21, 1927.
Typed letter from the Secretary of the Native Sons Hall Association, to Mr. Alphonse Sutter, the real grandson of J.A. Sutter, son of Sutter's son Alphonse Wilhelm Sutter, regarding the removal of the elder Sutter's remains to the Moravian Cemetery in Lititz, PA (the younger Sutter was desirous to bring his grandfather's remains to California, it seems). A carbon intended for the curator of Sutter's Fort in Sacramento, signed in ink. Sept. 12, 1927.

A fascinating, amusing, and possibly criminal attempt to derive funds from the state of California, in partial compensation for the vast amount of money given by the original Sutter to philanthropic causes in the Golden State. Two of the letters from Mrs. R. Garcia are addressed to His Excellency the Governor, one to All the Native Sons of Sacramento.
Condition Report: Normal wear; very good.
