Impressive Chinese Tang Dynasty - Sheep Laying Down
East Asia, China, Tang Dynasty, ca. 618 to 907 CE. A charming, hollow-molded terracotta sheep laying in a recumbent position. Hooved legs are tucked beneath the muscular body, and a thick neck supports the conical head. Rounded ovoid eyes, drooping ears, a crested snout with slit-form nostrils, and a petite mouth define the zoomorphic countenance. Scattered areas of the original buffware surface are exposed where the dark-grey pigment has worn away, though this certainly does not detract from the skilled artistry of this fabulous example! Size: 6.9" L x 2.7" W x 3.125" H (17.5 cm x 6.9 cm x 7.9 cm).
Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection, purchased in Hong Kong in the 1980s
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.
We ship worldwide to most countries and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience.
#141260
Condition Report: Minor nicks and abrasions to head, body, and tail, with light fading to areas of original pigmentation, and softening to some finer details, otherwise intact and very good. Light earthen deposits throughout.
