Impressive Greek Attic Blackware Cup Ring Handles

[ translate ]

Ancient Greece, Athens, Attic, ca. late 6th to 5th century BCE. A beautiful wheel-thrown pottery cup, of a sizable form with a discoid foot and concave base, a squat stem, a hemispherical lower body with a pair of protruding horizontal ribs, a slightly flared upper body and rim, and an applied ring handle on either side. The vessel features thick glazing of a jet-black hue across the handles, body, and top of foot, and the recessed base is adorned with a petite 'bullseye' ring motif. Large cups like this example were used for containing and consuming vast amounts of wine during banquets, rituals, and everyday use, and the twin-handled design suggests that this vessel was perhaps ceremonial in nature. Size: 7.1" W x 4" H (18 cm x 10.2 cm).

Provenance: ex-Merrin Gallery, New York, New York, USA before 2000

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.

We ship worldwide to most countries and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience.

#149885
Condition Report: Professional repair to one handle, with resurfacing and light overpainting along break lines. Small chip to rim, with minor abrasions and light encrustations along foot, body, and handles. Nice earthen deposits throughout, and areas of silver iridescence on exterior and interior.
