Impressive Holy Land Iron Age Pottery Amphora

Ancient Near East, Holy Land, the Levant, Iron Age, ca. 1200 to 1000 BCE. A large terracotta amphora vessel with a piriform body, rounded shoulders, a loop handle, broad neck, and a flared rim, all resting on a ring foot. Remains of pigments decorate the exterior neck, and body forming linear banding in red and umber slip on the buff ground. Throughout are nice remains of earthen encrustations and mineral deposits. Size: 8.9" Diameter x 9.625" H (22.6 cm x 24.4 cm)

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-Daryl Kulok collection, New York, USA, acquired in the 2000s

Condition Report: Repaired from multiple pieces with restoration to small areas of rim and 1 large area of body, with resurfacing and overpainting along new material and break lines. Abrasions and fading to surface pigment, with light encrustations, and nicks to rim, handle, and foot. Light remains of pigment across neck and midsection.
