Impressive Mochica Pottery Vessel, Smiling Drummer

Pre-Columbian, Peru, Moche, ca. 400 CE. This is one enthusiastic percussionist! A finely rendered and quite sizeable polychrome terracotta spouted vessel in the form of a seated drummer with an expressive visage brandishing a nearly ear-to-ear toothy grin, wide-open almond-shaped eyes, a fleshy nose, and a generally happy countenance with incised wrinkles and deep naso-labial folds to indicate advanced age. The drummer wears a white cap or headscarf, a matching white garment, and holds the drum which is suspended from a shoulder strap across the torso in both hands upon the lap. A wonderful piece attesting to the Mochica people's love of music! Size: 8.375" W x 16.8" H (21.3 cm x 42.7 cm)

Condition Report: Restoration to areas of mouth, nose, face, area beneath left elbow, area along lower back, and upper spout, with resurfacing and overpainting along new material and break lines. Abrasions, nicks, and minor excisions to base, body, head, and spout, with a few stable hairline fissures, fading to original pigment, and light encrustations. Nice remains of original pigment throughout.
