Impressive Roman Glass Jar Applied Handles

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 2nd to 3rd century CE. A beautiful and sizable free-blown jar made from near-opaque, pale turquoise-hued glass with a concave base and rough pontil scar, a globular body with a rounded shoulder, a corseted neck line leading to a tall rim and wide mouth, and a pair of applied trail handles joining rim to shoulder. The exterior is adorned with nine indented circlets as well as roughly eleven raised diagonal ribs. Thick areas of silvery and rainbow-hued iridescence envelop most of the interior and exterior surfaces, making this an attractive example of fine Roman artistry! Condition Report: Minor nicks to upper handle terminals, rim, and pontil scar, with fading to some raised ribs, otherwise intact and very good. A pontil scar or mark indicates that a vessel was free-blown, while the absence of such a mark suggests that the work was either mold-blown or that the mark was intentionally smoothed away or wore away over time. Nice earthen deposits as well as great silver and rainbow iridescence throughout.
