Impressive ocean floor fossil w/ prehistoric sea lilies

[ translate ]

Impressive ocean floor fossil with prehistoric sea lilies, Upper Silurian Period, c. 420 million years ago, from the Anti-Atlas Mountains, North Africa. Truly a museum grade display fossil, showcasing a large prehistoric sea lily of the species Scyphocrinus elegans. The slab was formerly from the bottom of the Silurian sea where a number of these creatures died and became buried still in their original articulated positions, as they were when once alive. While still alive today, sea lilies were much more prevalent in the ocean in prehistoric times.Special highlights of why this piece is different than most offered are its unusually large size, the quality of the preparation and detail, and the completeness of a large intact portion of this former crinoid colony. No paint, which is often typical on other examples, is applied to this specimen, allowing for incredible detail to be seen as a result of the professional preparation. There is no fabrication of the crinoids, with just repair and fil to the original excavation saw lines. The entire back of the slab is reinforced with epoxy. There are numerous complete, large crinoid specimens on this slab, most retaining their long stems and fully inflated calyxes. The concentration and completeness of these large crinoids far exceeds what is usually seen offered for sale. Matrix: 28 in x 23 in x 1 ½ - 2 in. Ex French private collection.

Condition: The absence of a condition statement does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from wear and tear, imperfections , the effects of aging, or repair/restoration work. Interested bidders are strongly encouraged to request a condition report on any lots upon which they intend to bid, prior to placing a bid, and we will be happy to give you a full overview of the items' condition.
