In the Manner of Matthias Gerung (German, 1500-1569) Oil on Cradled Panel, Ca. Late 16th/early 17th C., "The Adoration", H 21" W 17.25" | Unsigned. Adoration scene of Mary, Joseph, Anne and a saint looking over the Christ child. the four haloed figures kneel and stand outside of a stable with an ox looking on. Background having a cityscape of Bethlehem. Panel verso bearing a red wax seal of an eagle over a lion. Having a substantial ebonized carved wood frame, H 31.5", W 28". Provenance: Collection of Peter B. Frantz (1921-2019), Bay City, MI. By family descent. Purchased at Baumkotter Gallery, 63a Kensington Church Street, London.

Condition Report: Worm holes at the verso and edges of the panel. Chipping and small losses at the edges of the panel, which is also bowed. Scattered over paint touch ups (over and under a layer of varnish) in background, clothing and ox head. See UV photos. Chipping at the edges of the frame. Nicely detailed and executed painting with some conservation done over it's many years of existence. | Please note all lots show signs of wear commensurate with age and use, and the lack of a statement regarding condition does not imply the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from defects or the effects of aging.
