"Memorial of the inauguration of the statue of Franklin". Prepared and printed by authority of the City Council. Boston, 1857, no copyright, printed by Geo Rand [who also printed the 1st edition of the 'Uncle Tom's Cabin'].

Hard boards, original brown cloth with gold title on spine and gilt medallion of Franklin front board, [some wear, cloth creases between spine and boards]; 6.1/2" x 10"; discarded library book with a library label inside front cover, paper strip at the front hinge, removed paper strip at the back hinge; 412 pages, some foxing, good to very good condition.

It contains an oration by Hon. Robert C. Winthrop, addresses by Mayor Rice, Hon. F.W. Lincoln, Jr., and notes by Dr. N.B. Shurtleff. Contains four plates, viz.: of the statue, monument in the Granary yard, birthplace, and monument on Franklin street. All four plates on heavy woven paper are present.

Provenance:
The book was a gift to the Abbot Public Library by the sculptor, William Wetmore Story (1819-1895) in the name of his father, Joseph Story (1779-1845), one of the most significant figures in early American constitutional history. The inscription on the half-title page is signed "Joseph Story, Boston Nov 28th 1857." In 1856, William Page completed a commissioned bust of his late father, now in the Memorial Hall, Harvard University.
