Inca Textile Coca Cloth w/ Tassels

**First Time At Auction**

Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Incan Empire, ca. 1200 to 1532 CE. A vibrant textile panel comprised of tightly-woven camelid (llama or alpaca wool) fibers exhibiting a vertically-striated pattern in crimson, cream, navy, amethyst, and espresso hues. The top and bottom are reinforced with thick sewn borders, and multi-stranded tassels hang from each corner. This cloth was probably used to wrap a bundle of coca leaves and other personal effects - the owner would have tied the package together using the tassels. Size: 17.5" W x 16" H (44.4 cm x 40.6 cm).

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex-private H. J. Westermann collection, Germany, acquired 1955 - 1965
