Incesu

Second half 19th century, 117 x 100 cm, Central Anatolia, Cappadocia

The design layout of this small red-ground Konya is reminiscent of yastiks, but it is distinctly larger than these cushion faces and probably served as a sitting rug. Three hooked hexagons placed on the central axis, with Talish rosettes at their centres, are each framed by four hooked triangles, resulting in a field composition of three horizontal panels. The white main border of floral stems is unusually wide. The shield forms decorated with small trees in the red elems are an identifying feature of Incesu rugs. Butterweck has illustrated a comparative example, and a long rug presenting the same field design is published in Brüggemann/Böhmer. – Very good condition, original finishes all around, including the long kilim ends.
