Index Librorum Prohibitorum. Alexandri VII. Pontificis Maximi Issu Editus.

Rome: Ex Typographia Reverendae Camerae Apostolicae, 1664.

Quarto, large woodcut papal arms to title page; illegible contemporary institutional inscription below imprint; bound in full contemporary parchment, spine repaired; housed in a custom folding red morocco case; some worm trails neatly repaired; 9 x 6 1/2 in.

Among the myriad titles of banned heretical books found listed in these pages, the curious reader will find Galileo's Dialogo and Copernicus's De Revolutionibus. The immensity of the task is withering. Surely compiling this list of thousands required a great machine of inquisitors buying up all the latest publications, reading them, scouring each for unacceptably incendiary passages, and then drawing up the detailed litany of offensiveness to squelch. The names of this army of censors are listed in the last signature.
