The traditional framing of the depiction with a garland of leaves on a gold ground and a further blue-ground border are reminiscent of a carpet due to the size of the picture.

Probably depicting a wedding scene at the court of a Mughal ruler (16th to mid-19th century), which is suggested by the style of dress shown, which can also be observed in a similar style in a miniature from the British Museum (cf. www.britishmuseum.org/collection/ob ject/W_1920-0917-0-13-13).

The bride and groom are in a garden on a meadow under a richly stocked mango tree (symbolising fertility). In the foreground are various vessels, presumably containing oils, tinctures, food, wine and desserts. In the background, the decorated bed is being prepared by two women. The bride is being sprayed with something that looks like henna by an assistant. The many (court) ladies, some of whom are playing musical instruments, frame the lovers (bride and groom) and emphasise the festive atmosphere.

Indien, Hochzeitsszene am Hofe eines Mogulherrschers, Deckfarben auf Seide, wohl 19. Jahrhundert. Die traditionelle Rahmung der Darstellung mit einer Blattgirlande auf Goldgrund sowie einer weiteren blaugrundigen Bordüre erinnern wegen der Größe des Bildes an einen Teppich. Dargestellt ist vermutlich eine Hochzeitsszene am Hofe eines Mogulherrschers (16. bis Mitte 19. Jahrhundert), was durch den gezeigten Kleidungsstil nahegelegt wird, den man ähnlich auch auf einer Miniatur aus dem British Museum beobachten kann (vgl. www.britishmuseum.org/collection/ob ject/W_1920-0917-0-13-13).
Braut und Bräutigam befinden sich in einem Garten auf einer Wiese unter einem reich bestückten Mangobaum (Zeichen für Fruchtbarkeit). Im Vordergrund stehen verschiedene Gefäße; vermutlich mit Ölen, Tinkturen sowie Speisen, Wein und auch Süßspeisen. Im Hintergrund das geschmückte Bett, das von zwei Frauen vorbereitet wird. Die Braut wird von einer Helferin mit etwas besprüht, das wie Henna aussieht. Die vielen (Hof-) Damen, die teilweise Musikinstrumente spielen, umrahmen das Liebespaar (Brautpaar) und untermalen die feierliche Stimmung.
