Inscribed Civil War Dictionary - 8th Mass.
Leather-bound 1863 volume of William G. Webster's “Army and Navy Pocket Dictionary” containing a clear pencil and ink inscription identifying it to James B. Gott, Company E 8th Massachusetts Infantry. Dictionary shows some wear from honest use but is intact. Gott was a 36-year old mariner from Bevery, MA when he enlisted as a private on 8/12/1862. He mustered in the following month and was subsequently mustered out in Boston on 8/7/1863. Gott then joined the 90-day 2nd Company Massachusetts Unattached Infantry on 5/3/1864, an organization which served in coastal forts or interior points within the state. Following the war, Gott was a member of J.H. Chipman, Jr. GAR Post #89 in Beverly, MA.
