Interior Scene with Figures and a Dog; French School, 18th century; Oil on canvas, 32 x 39.5 cm
A sketch characterized by lively, immediate painterly quality, depicting an interior animated by several female figures and a dog. The composition is built through rapid brushstrokes and a warm color palette dominated by browns, ochres, and reds, rendered with a free and abbreviated brushwork.Given the concise nature of the execution and the still-loose construction of the forms, the work can be interpreted as a sketch or preparatory study for a larger composition, perhaps intended to be developed later into a more refined version. The narrative approach and the intimate tone of the scene recall French genre painting from the second half of the 18th century, which focused on the depiction of domestic and family life.
