Property of a Private Collector, Washington, D.C.
Jacob van Spreeuwen
Leiden 1609/10 - after 1658
Interior of a kitchen with a seated woman peeling onions, a child hiding behind her, and a child holding a cabbage on a barrel

oil on panel, in a painted trompe-l'oeil window
panel: 27½ by 22¾ in.; 69.9 by 57.7 cm.
framed: 35¾ by 32 in.; 90.8 by 81.3 cm.

Condition Report:
The panel is flat, stable and cradled on the reverse. The image reads well beneath clear varnish with textural details retained, such as on the cabbage leaves. No restoration is visible to the naked eye. Minor frame abrasion is visible around the edges but is not distracting. Under UV inspection, finely applied small strokes of retouching are scattered throughout, with concentrated areas along the bottom edge of the trompe l'oeil window, in the floor tiles, around the altarpiece at upper right, on the left half of the woman's lap, the left side of her face, and in shadows on the 2 central figures' garments. The painting has been well restored and should hang in its present state. Offered in a decoratively carved giltwood frame with nameplate reading "Gerard Dou 1613-1675."
