Inuit Walrus Ivory Cribbage Board, Scrimshaw Motifs

Native American, Northwestern United States, Alaska, Inuit, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A walrus tusk hand carved into a cribbage board with intricate scrimshawed motifs of animals on the ivory surface, and an openwork banner that says "NOME ALASKA." The carver created a compartment on the wider end to store the playing pieces by carving out the dentine and riveting a thin panel of dentine to the end that swivels open. Size: 15.5" L x 2.25" W x 2" H (39.4 cm x 5.7 cm x 5.1 cm)
