Place Published: Ipswich, MA
Publisher:
Date Published: 1905
Description:

Six prints on Japanese paper + title leaf with text. 25x20 cm (10x8"), set loose in paper folder printed in orange.

Inscribed at top right of the front wrapper, "Compliments of Arthur W. Dow, 1906." At the top left is the ownership signature of Mary Ketcham, and Ketcham is lightly inked on the back of each print. Rare set of prints produced by the American painter, printmaker, photographer and influential arts educator. As noted on the introductory leaf, "These rough sketches are analogous to the pencil jottings and thumb-box notes made by artists in picture galleries. The six prints accompanying this text are photographic reproductions in fac-simile and are printed by hand on Japanese paper." The subjects are: Chrysanthemum; Iris; Fish; Lily; Polly; and Raven. OCLC locates only one copy, at Harvard University.
Condition Report: Folder a bit browned, splitting at fold; Chrysantemum paper darkened, evidently from exposure to the acidic paper of the title leaf, with several edge chips; very good.
