Piece/Object: Votive offering Civilisation: Iberian Art Date/Period: 4th-3rd c. BC Material: Bronze Dimensions: 6 cm Provenance: -Ex Sammlung Dr. M. E Schweiz 1970-1980s. -Ex German collection 2000s -Ex G&M DESCRIPTION Male votive tablet depicting an offering warrior with braids, almond-shaped eyes and a prominent nose. His arms are outstretched; in one of them he is probably holding a spear (now lost) . He wears a tunic that covers him down to his feet and a sagum (typical cloak of Iberian soldiers) . The figure rests on an extension of the piece as a base. A falcata protrudes from under the sagum, revealing its hilt in the shape of a horse's head and the relief of the blade under the cloak. A shield (caetra) is attached to the back with ribbons. This piece is considered to be of exceptional importance, as it offers many details of the clothing and weapons used by the warriors of pre-Roman Iberia in a figure which, although quite realistic, still reflects the characteristic features of Iberian art. Parallels: In a photo it can be compared with an ex-voto of similar typology exhibited in the National Archaeological Museum. Condition: The figure is intact. The piece retains the earth adhering to the bronze, giving it a brown patina, with minor surface wear as can be seen in the photographs. The seller guarantees that he has acquired this lot legally.
