Iron Relief Hanging Plaque by Ichiju

Executed by Isshu, this iron plaque features an expressive monkey rendered in high relief inlay. An inro and a folding fan placed beside it complete the composition, evoking the refined accessories and cultured lifestyle of the Edo period. The monkey's fur is meticulously engraved, while the flowing drapery and animated facial expression demonstrate remarkable sculptural skill. The rich iron ground is enhanced with subtle gilt and colored metal accents, creating an elegant contrast and emphasizing the depth characteristic of high relief metalwork. The playful theme of a monkey admiring a monkey-form netsuke reflects the wit and artistic ingenuity for which Meiji metalwork is celebrated. Combining technical mastery with a charming narrative, this plaque is an outstanding example of Japanese decorative metal art. Diameter: 55.6cm
