Irv Novick (1916-2004)
Irv Novick Capt. Storm #9 Cover Original Art (DC, 1965). This double-whammy struggle against enemy divers clinches Novick's mastery of the war-comics genre, dating from a period during which the artist also was developing a long-term identification with such superhero books as Batman and The Flash. Capt. Storm was a similarly heroic figure, billed as DC's "wooden-legged P.T. boat skipper." Novick had retrenched as an advertising-agency artist earlier in the 1960s, but he was lured back to DC with an uncommonly generous freelance arrangement. Novick's signature appears at lower right. Ink over graphite and blue pencil on Bristol board stat logotype overlay. Image area, edge-to-edge, 12.5" x 18.25".
