Isaac Hayes, along with his creative partner David Porter, wrote and produced some of the most memorable soul songs of the 1960s including "Soul Man" and "Hold On, I'm Coming," both by Sam and Dave. Hayes used his evocative bass vocal range, eclectic choice of material and his then-unconventional appearance to create a public persona as a solo performer. He became a major star and this record, Black Moses, cemented his place in popular culture.
