The sitter was the wife of the French author Henri Asselin, who lived in The Hague. Henri Asselin was a close friend of Israels, who painted his full-length portrait in 1919. Asselin worked as a press attaché at the French embassy in The Hague in circa 1916-1919. He was the author of: 'L'Ame et la vie d'un peuple. La Hollande dans le monde', Paris 1921.
