Abbasid, al-Muntasir (248h), gold dinar, Madinat al-Salam, 247h, rev. Muhammad /rasul/ Allah/al-Muntasir billah, wt. 4.27gms. (A.231; Bern type 159, unrecorded for this mint), minor staining on obverse and light scratches in field, otherwise extremely fine, a coin of the highest rarity
The brief reign of al-Muntasir lasted less than six months. The eldest son of the caliph al-Mutawakkil, he was a named heir. He became involve in a rivalry with his brother al-Mu’tazz for succession. This led to a power struggle which threatened the survival of the Abbasid caliphate. Al-Muntasir emerged triumphant; however, his success was short lived as he died soon after, aged 25.
An example of this issue was sold by Morton & Eden, Auction 103, Lot 26 on 24th October 2019 for £37,000.
