Israel / The Land of the Bible. ca. 1955.
After studying art in Romania, particularly the work of the Dadaists, Jean David left his homeland by boat in 1932, only to be detained by the British and deported to an illegal immigrant camp in Cyprus. He managed to reach what would soon become Israel in 1944, enlisted in its army, and began creating promotional posters like this to encourage tourism to his newfound home—here, King David extends the invitation. His work is notably filled with zest and humor, featuring odd combinations with a touch of Surrealism.
