Italian School, 17th Century
St. Francis Holding a Skull
Inscribed "Q78" l.l., with a collector's red wax seal monogrammed "M.G" on the back of the frame.
Oil on canvas, 25 1/2 x 19 1/2 in. (65.0 x 49.5 cm), framed.
Condition: Lined, old retouch, fine craquelure.
N.B. The red wax stamp on the frame may correspond to Émile Maurice Marignane (French, 1879-1956), art dealer and critic. Although Lugt reproduces his stamp in ink only, the configuration and style of the two letters are very similar to those shown in the red wax seal on this work. (Lugt L.1872) Marignane was primarily interested in drawings, but he also dealt in prints and paintings.
