Italian School - Noli me tangere
\Artist: Italian School
Technique: Oil on canvas\Signature: Not signed\Dimensions: 112_69_112_cm
Superb 18th Century Venetian school Italian religious oil on canvas that represents Mary Magdalena with the resurrected Christ. Noli me tangere ('touch me not') is the Latin version of a phrase spoken, according to John 20: 17, by Jesus to Mary Magdalene when she recognised him after his resurrection. The painting appears to have been relined within the last 50 years (perhaps slightly longer ago) and is mounted within a later period frame ( see photos) which compliment this work very well. The frame is in excellent condition . The painting is in excellent condition for its age and has areas of craquelure throughout ( see photos) as one would expect; however the paint is very stable and appears to have been cleaned ( perhaps when relined) and re-varnished. The canvas tension is very acceptable. Whist we do not claim this to be the work of a master , it is none the less very finely painted; and perhaps was painted by a student of one.
