Italian school; 17th century.
"The circumcision of Jesus" and "Jesus among the doctors".
Oil on canvas. Relined.
They present faults and restorations.
They conserve frame of the seventeenth century.
Measurements: 29 cm (diameter); 39 cm (diameter).
Pair of tondos in which scenes of the childhood of Jesus are represented. In one of them we can see Jesus among the doctors and in the other the circumcision of Jesus. Both the subject matter of the two scenes and the round format indicate that these paintings belonged to a cycle formed by more scenes of the infancy of Christ.
One of the images shows Jesus as a child among the doctors, based on a passage from the Gospel of Luke, where the presence of the young Jesus among the theologians or doctors of the Mosaic Law is related. The text narrates that Jesus, being twelve years old, was lost in Jerusalem, where he had gone with his parents on the occasion of the Jewish Passover. The episode of the circumcision is recorded in the Gospel of Luke. The Evangelist narrates this passage (2:21), which will become a common iconographic theme in the Christian tradition, and which precedes the Presentation of the Child in the Temple. Art uses the information provided by the Apocryphal Gospels (Pseudo-Matthew, Arabic Gospel of the infancy, mainly) to add details to the theme that, in painting, is shown from the end of the 10th century, usually forming part of the Cycle of Mary or of Christ.
