Italian school (XVIII) - Saint Peter Repentant

Baroque painting of Saint Peter, who is shown with his attributes, the two keys and the cock. He is weeping because he has betrayed Christ. There is a strong expression of pain on his face.

The painting was found in East Frisia in northwest Germany, a region which has strong ties with the Netherlands, so it was probably painted in the Netherlands or in Germany around the year 1700.
It is painted in oil on a wooden board, which has been framed and fastened onto another, larger board.
There are some horizontal lines in the picture, where the wooden baord has begun to crack.
