"The archangels".
Oil on canvas. Relined.
It presents restorations on the pictorial surface.
Measurements: 51 x 35.5 cm; 76 x 60 cm (frame).
This work shows us an unusual scene, starring four main characters who are accompanied by a procession of lovebirds. The protagonists of the scene share the earthly and heavenly space, being all of them in harmony with the break of glory that bathes the whole scene in a golden hue. Each one of them, completely differentiated, is shown independently, sharing the characteristic of the wings; one points to the break, two others reflect self-absorbed, and the one who is on earth rests his foot on a dead animal and directs his face towards the celestial light.
Formally, it is inscribed within academicism, especially in the way the figures are represented. Moreover, the composition therefore follows classical rules based on a clear order that allows an easy reading, in fact, the artist opts for a triangular composition of traditional character. In addition, the drawing is rigorous and firm, although a taste for the sumptuous can be appreciated in the conception, especially in the splendor of the color that subtracts prominence to the line and advocates a greater dynamism. The academicism is a direct inheritance of classicism, and hence the predilection for themes such as the one presented here, A biblical theme that has captured from a sensual and decorative point of view away from the solemnity of ancient classical art.
