A Thirty Three Piece Piero Benzoni Green Onyx and Marble Silver-Plated and Gilt Bronze Chess Set, Italy, 60-70 years of the 20th century. Chess set made by the prestigious goldsmith Piero Benzoni. The figures depict the Mongol Invasion of Europe. The Western Campaign lasted from 1236 to 1242. Batu led the troops, Subotai (called one of the four Genghis's fiercest dogs) was his main counselor.. Piero Benzoni was born near Melegnano, a small town in Lombardy, south of Milan. At the age of 14, he began his apprenticeship in silversmith workshops. In 1966, he founded his own company in Melegnano. In 1976, Benzoni started a new line he called "Art Bronzes" making beautiful models of chess sets in antique costumes, representing different historical periods. Over the decades, several chess sets produced by Benzoni himself ended up in the homes of the wealthier classes. One of his clients was Michael Jackson, who had a Benzoni chess set in his mansion. The original piece is still on display in the Michael Jackson Museum in Las Vegas, Nevada. A very rare, luxurious chess set. Size
