Ivan Ivanovich Shishkin (b. Yelabuga 1832, d. St. Petersburg 1898)

The sun breaking through the branches of the spruce forest, in the foreground a stream with mossy banks. Signed and dated I. Shishkin 1898 (in Cyrillic). Oil on canvas. 137×99 cm.

Provenance: The Swedish shipping agent Tore Ternell (b. Gothenburg 1931, d. s. p. 2025). He was stationed in Shanghai from 1956 to 1961 for the shipping company Ostasiat, which represented Ekman Foreign Agencies. Tore Ternell acquired the present painting in Shanghai around 1957. When he, together with several other foreigners, was expelled from China in 1961, he subsequently took up residence in his home country of Sweden. Before leaving Shanghai, he had several acquisitions sent from China by Swedish diplomatic mail, including this painting, which had its frame and stretcher removed. It was then sent rolled up, which the painting still bears some authentic traces of. Once back in Sweden, Tore Ternell had the painting given a new frame and stretcher in Gothenburg. The fact that a painting by Shishkin could be acquired in Shanghai can of course be due to many reasons. However, an obvious idea is that it was brought to China by a Russian refugee in connection with the Russian revolution and the Russian civil war of 1917–1922. Thence by Tore Ternell's daughter until today.
