Hard boards, leather with five raised bands and black labels on spine; 4.1/2" x 7.1/2"; discarded library book with stamped number on the back of the title page, antique red stamp on title and last pages; additional blind stamp; a little soiling, c.3 pages have a c.1/4" edge crease, very good condition.
Izaak Walton (c.1593-1683) was an English writer. Best known as the author of "The Compleat Angler," he also wrote a number of biographies.
Robert White (1645-1703) was an English artist and engraver. A Londoner, he was a pupil of David Loggan, and became a leading English portrait engraver of the late 1600s. White was celebrated for his original portraits, drawn in pencil on vellum in the manner of Loggan. He died in reduced circumstances in Bloomsbury Market, London, where he had long resided, in November 1703. Numerous of his works are in museum collections.

Robert Sanderson (1587-1663) was born in Sheffield, Yorkshire. and educated at Rotherham grammar school and Lincoln College, Oxford. He was appointed one of the royal chaplains in 1631, and being one of the king's favorite preachers, was appointed Regius Professor of Divinity at Oxford in 1642, a chair he occupied 1646-48 and 1660-61. He was appointed Bishop of Lincoln in 1661. His book on logic, LOGICAE ARTIS COMPENDIUM (1615) became a popular textbook for many years and was studied by the young Isaac Newton. His sermon "Nine Cases of Conscience Resolved" (1678) placed him at the head of English causits.
Sanderson's logic remained popular even after the appearance of the influential Port-Royal Logic. Sanderson's sermons were also admired; but he is perhaps best remembered for his Nine Cases of Conscience Resolved (1678), in consideration of which he has been placed at the head of English casuists. He left large collections of historical and heraldic matter in MS.
