J. A. Atkinson - German Fox Trap, Foreign Field Sports - Folio Hand-colored Aquatint (1813)

[ translate ]

"German Fox Trap" is a hand-colored aquatint after John Augustus Atkinson from Foreign Field Sports, Fisheries, Sporting Anecdotes, published in London by Edward Orme in 1813-1814. In a woodland beside a wooden fence, a fox climbs a pivoting ramp towards bait hung above it; the ramp tips under the animal's weight and drops it into the trap below.

Orme's Foreign Field Sports presented hunting, fishing and trapping customs from Russia and Scandinavia to Asia and the Americas in hand-colored aquatints after Atkinson, Samuel Howitt and others, and is a classic color-plate sporting book of the Regency period.

John Augustus Atkinson (1775-c. 1833) was an English painter and etcher who spent about seventeen years in St Petersburg, published A Picturesque Representation of the Manners, Customs and Amusements of the Russians (1803-1804) and later painted military and sporting scenes.
