Johannes van den Avele (1655 Amsterdam - 1727 Stockholm): Synedrium Magnum, "the great council", "the supreme court", from a book, 18th century, Etching

Technique: Etching on Paper

Inscription: Signed lower right in the printing plate "J.v.d. Avele inv. et f." and inscribed below "Synedrium Magnum". Depicted is a court trial in the council chamber. The great council consisted of 71 members, already seated here in a semicircle, the president in the middle, at either end the secretaries. The synedrium passed laws and judged war and peace. No one was allowed to oppose it without losing his life, until this power was restricted by the Romans.
