J. Buchanan ALS as Pres. With Navy Content
ALS
An autographed letter signed by then-President James Buchanan (1791-1868) to Reverend John Chambers. 1p, measuring 6.25" x 8", Washington, D.C., April 20, 1858. Signed in the lower right as "James Buchanan", he informs the clergyman that he has no power as President to appoint a midshipman to the U.S. Naval Academy. Moderate letter folds and creases, with general age toning throughout. Small isolated soiling below signature; intermittent spot staining on verso. Overall, very good.
In full:
"I would gladly answer yr esteemed favor as it deserves; but the extreme pressure on my time prevents me from saying more than that I do not possess the power to appoint a midshipman. Nominations for the Naval School are made exclusively by Representatives in Congress from the proper District. I should gladly oblige Dr. Odenheimer & yourself if this were in my power."
Buchanan is likely referring to William Henry Odenheimer (1817-1879), a Philadelphia-born religious scholar who received a Doctorate in Divinity from the University of Pennsylvania in 1841. He was later consecrated as the third Episcopal Bishop of New Jersey in 1859, serving until his death in the late 1870s.
This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
