J L H Matthais Hess, Nuremberg – extensive belt-driven model workshop and hand-operated power plant, Germany, c.1920–1935, (cardboard packing base) an impressive and unusual assembled model workshop or demonstration power plant comprising a series of painted metal steam-engine accessories, mounted upon a long rectangular wooden display base and interconnected by cord drive belts, the installation incorporates four principal mechanisms: a reciprocating workshop machine or pump housed within a decoratively lined grey and green tinplate casing; a cylindrical red and black rotary machine with vertical frame and pulley drive; a vertical multi-spindle workshop accessory mounted upon a pressed-metal base and fitted with large green spoked pulley, at one end, a substantial enclosed flywheel or generator unit fitted with a hand crank, having J L H mark, the mechanisms are linked by belts so that rotation of the large hand wheel can transmit motion through the various accessories, allowing the installation to be demonstrated independently by hand, the arrangement is equally characteristic of the accessories intended for connection to stationary steam engine and may therefore be regarded as a miniature factory or workshop demonstration set, stamped model or reference numbers, including '62' to the enclosed reciprocating machine and '60' to the vertical workshop accessory, mounted upon a dark-stained wooden plinth, approximately 460 mm long × 120 mm wide overall.
