The print is from Johann Caspar Lavater's Physiognomische Fragmente, zur Beförderung der Menschenkenntniß und Menschenliebe. Between 1775 and 1778, he published the multi-volume work in which human characters are explained on the basis of their physiognomy. Well-known artists such as Daniel Chodowiecki, Johann Rudolph Schellenberg or Johann Heinrich Lips provided models for his collection of physiognomics, which contains numerous portraits of well-known and anonymous people.

Condition: Very good condition. Slightly foxed. The edges of the sheet are partly untrimmed and in places slightly bumped and discoloured. On the sitter's forehead a brush hair can be seen from the printing process.
