Inscription: Inscribed below in the printing plate with the initials of the sitter: "J.L.P.". Signed and dated by the artist below.

The print is from Johann Caspar Lavater's Physiognomische Fragmente, zur Beförderung der Menschenkenntniß und Menschenliebe. Between 1775 and 1778, he published the multi-volume work in which human characters are explained on the basis of their physiognomy. Well-known artists such as Daniel Chodowiecki, Johann Rudolph Schellenberg or Johann Heinrich Lips provided models for his collection of physiognomics, which contains numerous portraits of well-known and anonymous people.
