Technique: Steel engraving on Paper

Inscription: To the left of them, a boy on horseback has just arrived, whom the title identifies as a messenger boy. The content of his message, however, remains uncertain for the viewer.

Date: c. 1850

Description: Inscribed below the depiction "Painted by Sir William Wilkie R.A./Engraved by J. Mitchell". In a courtyard of a peasant house four figures are visible in the foreground. An elderly woman, next to her another woman and a young girl are standing in front of the entrance to the homestead. A chicken pecks in the yard, looking for food.
