J. N. "Ding" Darling (American, 1876-1962) Paul Revere Rides Again, Des Moines Register Tribune newspaper cartoon, September 26, 1942 India ink on Bristol board 22-1x4 x 18 inches (56.5 x 45.7 cm) (image) Signed lower right: Ding One of America's greatest cartoonists of the first half of the 20th century and two-time winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Cartooning created this original wartime cartoon that was published on the front page of the September 26, 1942, Des Moines Register and syndicated to newspapers across the USA. J. N. "Ding" Darling's career began at the Sioux City Journal in 1900, and in 1906 he joined the art staff of the Des Moines Register and Leader. In the 1910s he worked at the New York Globe and New York Herald Tribune but returned to Des Moines for good in 1919. His Pulitzer Prizes came in 1924 and 1943. An ardent conservationist, he was instrumental in founding the National Wildlife Federation in 1936. Ding Darling's wonderful cartoony style is evident in this work that depicts Uncle Sam riding into an American home in the first year of America's involvement in World War II to urge citizens to "Collect All Your Scrap Metal and Turn It In.
