James Polk
[Washington, DC], February 15, 1849
J. Polk ALS as President Calling for a Cabinet Meeting
ALS

A brief autograph letter signed by the President, "James K. Polk", requesting the presence of Secretary of War William Marcy at a cabinet meeting. 1p, measuring 8" x 10", [Washington, DC], February 15, 1849. While we cannot determine the specific topics discussed at this meeting, major issues facing Polk at this time would have been related to the establishment of the new Department of the Interior, and transitioning out of office to make way for Zachary Taylor. Together with an original newspaper clipping advertising the same letter for sale at B. Altman & Co., dated May 15, 1966. Exhibits light offset toning to perimeter, with scattered soiling and handling marks throughout. Two mounting strips found in the upper corners of verso. Otherwise, very good.

In full:

"I desire that you will attend a meeting of the Cabinet at 1 o'clock P.M. today."

William L. Marcy (1786-1857) served as Secretary of War under Polk from 1845 to 1849, where he oversaw the Mexican-American War. He later returned to office in 1853, this time as Secretary of State under Franklin Pierce. It was during this time where he negotiated the Gadsden Purchase, which became the last major acquisition of land in the contiguous United States.

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
